TIPS AND TRICKS FOR STORING YOUR HERMÈS BIRKIN OR KELLY

The correct storage for your Hermès Birkin or Kelly makes all the difference!  Pictured above is my much loved and very used Birkin 30 that is currently 19 years old with the Birkin 30 pillow in place. At the bottom of the page the first picture on the far left shows what it looks like without a pillow. I purchased this bag preowned and it had been left unstuffed for many years, so slouchy!

When taking care of your own bags hopefully these tips will help.  Firstly ensure you have the right type of stuffing in the right size, made from materials that are safe to leave in your bag. In particular, in more humid climates it is better to avoid anything plastic or a derivative of and opt instead for something natural and breathable, that won't encourage a build up of moisture within the bag.

Secondly it is better to store the bag with the Sangles closed where possible. The right fit of pillow will ensure this isn't a problem. Leaving the Sangles open and dangling will be likely to cause creases, overly floppy Sangles and can damage and crack the wax edge paint over time.  It's also advisable to remove the lock, clochette and any bag charms you have on the bag and store them separately in the little dust bag they came with if possible.

Next, place your bag in it's dust bag and then depending on your particular leather it is recommended to then lay your bag down to 'sleep'. This does depend a bit on the leather though! The Taurillon Clemence bag pictured would be fine laying on it's back for long periods of time, as would Togo and several other of the grained and heavier leathers that Hermes offers. Laying them down means gravity is not playing so much of a part in making your bag slouch!

In a lighter, smoother leather such as Swift, Tadelakt, Box etc. I would leave them standing up in storage as laying down is more likely to encourage the indentation marks on the back from the interior pocket.  Personally I don't like to use the box the bag came in, but would opt for either a shelf in a wooden cabinet (not a glass or perspex display case, we want the air to be able to circulate!) or if you would like to use the box, leave the lid off.

I hope all of that helps you with storing your Hermès bag whilst keeping it in as good a condition as possible, but if you have any queries please drop me an email and I will be more that happy to help.
